About Us

Lake Friendly Kids

What:

The intent behind the Lake Friendly Label is to ultimately reduce the impacts on Lake Winnipeg from excessive nutrients and from other harmful materials in common household products. The Lake Friendly Label helps consumers better identify products that have been proven to be the best choice for the environment. The Lake Friendly Logo will heighten awareness and assist consumers in easily identifying products that are “Lake Friendly” encouraging greater choice and wider availability. The South Basin Mayors and Reeves Committee believe awareness and availability are key factors in restoring the health of Lake Winnipeg.

Who:

As a response to one of the recommendations in the Lake Winnipeg Stewardship Boards Report, the South Basin Mayors and Reeves Committee in cooperation with Manitoba Water Stewardship has taken steps to restore the health of Lake Winnipeg. The nine Municipal Leaders from communities in Lake Winnipeg’s South Basin formed a working group in 2007. The aim of this group is to do its part at the community-to-community level and to help restore the health of the world’s 10th largest freshwater lake.

The South Basin Mayors and Reeves Committee include:

  • Tammy Axelsson, Committee Chair, Mayor of Gimli
  • David Bell, Mayor, City of Selkirk
  • Bill McDonald, Reeve of Victoria Beach
  • Richard Gamble, Mayor of Dunnottar
  • Steve Strang, Municipal Mayor of St. Clements
  • Don Forfar, Reeve of St. Andrews
  • Harold Foster, Reeve of Bifrost
  • Don Pepe, Mayor of Winnipeg Beach
  • George Harbottle, Reeve of Alexander

The South Basin Mayors and Reeves are encouraging all of us who work, play or live in the South Basin to do our part in protecting and preserving our rivers and lakes.
