About the Logo

With so many choices and an often-confusing array of green-labelled products on store shelves, the South Basin Mayors and Reeves Committee developed a plan to help residents and visitors alike identify products that would be the best environmental choice for Lake Winnipeg.

Original winning logo

The first step was to develop a logo so consumers could easily recognize those products that would not harm Lake Winnipeg and enlisted the aid of schools within the region. Students from kindergarten through grade twelve attending schools within the municipalities of Alexander, Victoria Beach, St. Clements, St Andrews, Winnipeg Beach, Gimli, Bifrost, the City of Selkirk and the Village of Dunnottar participated and submitted over 250 designs - a huge success, demonstrating the commitment of residents in this area to protect our rivers, lakes and streams. The contest ended on May 22,2009.A finalist was selected from each participating grade and the selected logo was chosen from the finalists.

The winning logo will be used on products and on store shelves by retailers to help identify and inform Manitobans about the best products for protecting the aquatic environment.

The winning artist's school received $500.The winner received a cash prize of $500,a commemorative certificate,a framed copy of their winning logo, and an invitation to sail on the MV Namao. A runner up from each participating grade was also selected and received a commemorative certificate and framed copy of their logo, a $50.00 prize and an invitation to sail on the MV Namao.

Identifying and making Lake Friendly choices allows each of us to make a difference .

My Speech for "It's Lake Friendly" - JAKOB   MCDONALD

June 16, 2009

I would like to thank my teacher, Ms. Drzystek for telling me about this contest and encouraging me to do my best job. I would also like to thank the judges and everyone involved with this project for selecting my drawing to use for the logo. I am proud my artwork will be used in something this important.

In my culture we have a teaching about the Circle that says, EVERYTHING is connected. So, for example, if we make a choice to use Lake Friendly products, it will affect the lake--and our environment--in a good way.

I hope when people see my logo they will think about this, and realize how important their choices can be. Even one person can make a difference!

Megwetch/Thank you.
